A machine that lends an ear

As unassuming and attentive as the cat that it resembles, this sound recognition prototype will be installed in a retirement home. Presented by a team of Orange researchers at the 2021 Research Exhibition, it is designed to detect everyday sources of sound.

“Sound source detection technology makes it possible to recognise sounds in different contexts—at home, in industrial situations, while travelling, etc.—in order to enhance future services using ambient intelligence.”

 

The embedded sound recognition models are designed to respect privacy as much as possible, shorten processing times, limit connectivity requirements and improve the energy efficiency of the system. Distributed learning is used to ensure that the service is increasingly efficient, while respecting data confidentiality.

Sound source detection technology makes it possible to recognise sounds in different contexts—at home, in industrial situations, while travelling, etc.—in order to enhance future services using ambient intelligence.
